Prerana Rainbow Home was established in 2017 in Pune district to provide a safe, supportive environment for homeless girls aged 6–17. Most of the residents came from nomadic, tribal, and socio-economically marginalized communities. The program aimed to ensure their right to education, safety, and holistic development, addressing both immediate needs and long-term growth.
Over three years, 49 girls were provided with shelter, education, nutrition, healthcare, counseling, and life skills. The program focused on reintegrating girls with their families where possible while also providing pathways for vocational training or admission to government hostels. Emphasis was placed on leadership development, confidence building, and exposure to community and cultural activities, ensuring that the girls were not just surviving but thriving.
The home also worked with parents and communities to create awareness about the importance of girls’ education and rights. Several success stories emerged, including girls pursuing higher education, vocational training, and independent careers. The initiative demonstrated that providing consistent support, mentorship, and safe spaces could transform lives and empower marginalized girls to break cycles of poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion.
